The Herd

Summer

Summer is an Irish Draught cross, bred in Lisburn, Country Antrim (Ireland) by Walter Cunningham. She was born in 1996, I don’t know her exact birthday.

She was bought by me in 2004 at 8-ish years of age and spent a few years doing fun shows, before being put in foal in 2007 to Lan Garth Triple (Thoroughbred). Her foal Lan Garth Morgan le Fay was born in July 2008 and now competes at BE events across the UK with her rider Rebecca Baggs.

Summer was brought back into light work, which was a bit of a challenge around University and work commitments which kept me in the UK and her on the Isle of Man. In 2013 Summer presented with acute arthritis in her hocks, possibly due to a very hefty ridden career in her early life – without her history, I’ll never know for sure. Summer was given a lot of physio care and pain management with the instruction that she could do whatever she was comfortable doing.

Summer moved to the UK in early 2018 after much planning, and spent six months ‘retired’ living at excellent facilities managed by Jenny Fenton (Oxford). To everyone’s surprise Summer wanted to get back to Doing Things, and joined Poppy at their still-current yard.

Summer was introduced to ridden work, TREC, and supportive physiotherapy, and was cleared as fit enough to carry on with ridden work. In August 2019 Summer and I attended Loxwood Joust with The Order of the Pegasus group, or first ‘big’ show in at least ten years. Summer had a phenomenal time and despite my terrible aim at the targets the audience was very supportive of us!

Summer will continue to do whatever she is comfortable doing to maintain her health and fitness.

Poppy

Poppy is a traditional cob born on May 4th 2016 (Star Wars anyone?) in Portsmouth, bred by Clare Kempster and family. Her dam is a Piebald cob named Kitty, her Sire was Burnett’s Mr Murphy. Murphy passed away in early Spring 2017 meaning Poppy is one of his last foals. She has many half-siblings (and full siblings) whose owners I’d love to keep in contact with!

I am in no hurry to ‘start’ Poppy under saddle. In the meanwhile we are doing lots and lots of ground work including TREC, obstacle courses, walking-hacks, and some in-hand showing. Poppy is expressive and inquisitive, and a joy to work with (even in her stroppier moments).
